Search All Fields Help

Are you searching for something general in the architectural, planning or environmental disciplines with just one or two words in mind? Search All Fields searches all the fields in the entire database for your term. For best results type in specific or uncommon words, click Search and then scan through the results. If you don't find what you want first time, you can do another search using different words by clicking Search Again.

Note: When you find something in PADDI that seems relevant, click in the box at the top left of the record and you can then print it. Click on Getting Material for information on how you can get the full text version.

Some examples of different types of searches that you can do in PADDI:

  • To find references to a particular building type, enter the term in the plural (eg art galleries, pubs, motels, national schools, town halls, aquariums) and click Search.

  • To find references on a specific building (eg Blackwood Golf Centre), type "Blackwood" and click Search.

  • To find references on a particular subject, type in the most specific word(s) that relate(s) to your topic (eg groundwater, pollution, poverty, land use, crypts, stucco, planning permission) and click Search.

  • To find references on the work of specific architects type one surname to find all records with that name (eg typing in "Tallon" will give all records for Scott Tallon Walker but also all references to Tallon as sole architect). Note that in Search All Fields this will produce all records in which this name appears (eg typing in "Scott" will produce all records containing Scott as author as well).

Search tips:

  • Please note the database is case insensitive.

  • If you are searching for a building with a Saint's name in it, always use the abbreviated form of Saint without a full stop (eg St Patrick's Cathedral).

  • If you are searching for a building name or location which contains the word "Street", always type the word in full (eg Princes Street Market, North Street Arcade, Leeson Street).

  • To search easily for different variants of the same word, you can truncate the word using an asterisk, and then click Search (eg plaster* will search for all records containing the word plasterers, plastering and plasterwork). You can also truncate a year (eg 196* will retrieve all records containing any year in the 1960s). Please note that truncation may retrieve some irrelevant records.

  • If you find that you are getting no hits, no relevant hits or too many hits, you need to make your search more specific. Sometimes searching for single terms in PADDI produces a large number of results, owing to those terms being frequently used in many fields and records in the database (eg in Search All Fields a search for environmental or planning retrieves hundreds of references).

To make your search more specific, you can limit your search to one field, or search two or more different fields at once. Please go to the Advanced Search screen where you can use the full search power of the database. From this screen you can scan the Thesaurus, or subject listing, to find accepted search terms. Advanced Search Help is also available and you can click on Advanced Searching Techniques for examples.

Advanced Search Help

Building/Structure Name / Volume, Issue, Date / Place
Architect/Designer or Organisation / Document Type / Title
Author/Editor / Subject or Building Type

The Advanced Search screen allows searching of one or multiple specific fields. This enables you to focus your search precisely using the full capabilities of the database. Click on Advanced Searching Techniques for examples

Search tips :
  • Please note the database is not case sensitive.

  • To search easily for different variants of the same word, you can truncate the word using an asterisk, and then click Search (eg print* will search for printing, printmaking and printworks). You can also truncate a year (eg 196* will retrieve all records containing any year in the 1960s). Please note that truncation may retrieve some irrelevant records.

  • Building/Structure Name:
type in one or more words from the building name that you are trying to find eg Queen's University, (note that typing Queen's will give you Queen's Arcade etc as well).

NB if you are searching for a building with a Saint's name in it, always use the abbreviated form of Saint without a full stop, eg St Patrick's Cathedral, and if you are searching for a building name that contains the word Street, always type this word in full eg Princes Street Market, North Street Arcade.

  • Volume, Issue, Date:
you may type in the full year only (eg 2000) of the journal, book or other publication you are looking for. Or you may include the volume, issue number and full date (eg 189 (22) 22 March 1989) if you have a specific reference. To search for records from a particular decade, you can truncate using an asterisk (eg 196* will retrieve all records from the 1960s).

  • Place:
you can search by country, county, city, town, area or street address. It is best to type in broad locations such as towns or counties and only enter street, road, close etc in full if necessary eg Armagh, Cork, Belfast, Rathfarnham, Navan, North East Inner City, Malone Road, North Main Street.

  • Architect/Designer or Organisation:
if you are searching for material on a particular architect or firm, try typing one surname only. This will give you all records relevant to architects practising alone and will also locate a specific practice including that surname eg Tallon will retrieve all records for Niall Tallon and for Scott Tallon Walker.

Some different practices, however, incorporate the same surname (eg a search for O'Donnell can give at least three different firms). If this happens, add another surname to make the search more specific eg O'Donnell Scully (this will ignore any O'Donnell & Tuomey records).

For organisations you should try typing one or two key words in full: eg Department Environment will give you hits for the Department of the Environment.

If the organisation or architectural firm uses initials, enter them without gaps or punctuation eg JMJ (not J M J or J.M.J.).

You may click on the Architect/Designer link on the Advanced Search screen to search for the preferred form and variations. Advice on How to Search the Architect/Designer List is available below.

  • Document Type:
this should be used in combination with other fields. You can search for the following document types from the drop-down menu:
     - all types
     - journal article
     - book
     - part of book (chapters or sections)
     - report
     - newspaper article
     - thesis/dissertation
     - pamphlet
     - part of pamphlet

  • Title:
this field includes the titles of:
journal articles eg Dublin transportation study
journals eg Ulster Journal of Archaeology; Engineers Journal
chapters of books eg Cormac's Chapel: the beginnings of Irish Romanesque
books eg Phaidon Architectural Guide: Dublin
reports eg The Newry Regeneration Project
unpublished (grey) literature eg Drawings of Belfast Waterfront Hall

Search by entering two or more words you know are in the title.

  • Author/Editor:
type in the surname of the author. If it is a common name and you know the first name, type that in also eg McDonald Frank.

Sometimes the author of a work is a corporation, government department/agency or council. Type in two or three words from the organisation's name, as detailed above in Architect/Designer or Organisation.

  • Subject/Building Type:
enter as specific a subject or building type as possible
eg Subjects: eutrophication, rural planning, emigration, Art Deco, sustainable architecture
eg Building Types: laboratories, churches, factories, thatched buildings, secondary schools.

Note that spellings vary and there may be alternative words to define a subject. Use the preferred terms in the Thesaurus for best results. Any subject which is an adjective or which can be used adjectivally may be added to another appropriate subject to make your search term eg Georgian and houses can be joined to make Georgian houses or iron and sculpture to make iron sculpture.

You may enter more than one word or phrase which will help to refine your search but please be aware that the search facility may retrieve the words from separate phrases.

How to Search the PADDI Thesaurus

Click on the Thesaurus link on the Search screen. Select the first letter of the word that you are looking for and scroll down the presented list until you find a suitable subject term.

The Thesaurus will either:
  • confirm that the term you are thinking of is acceptable
    eg planning

  • give you more specific, acceptable variations of that term
    eg planning appeals

  • suggest that you use a different term
    eg planning, city
     Use: urban planning

  • suggest other related terms to search for also
    eg erosion, beach
     Use: beach erosion
     See Also: shore protection

Having found an acceptable subject or building type term, you may click and transfer it into the Subject search field. If you wish to enter more than one item into the search field, you can copy and paste the others. Please note that you can join any subject in the Thesaurus to any other subject term to create a compound subject such as Georgian houses, Victorian buildings or iron sculpture.
Then click Search.

How to Search the Architect/Designer List

Click on the Architect/Designer link on the Search screen. Select the first letter of the name that you are looking for and scroll down the presented list until you find the name of the architect or practice.

The Architect/Designer List will either:
  • confirm that the name you are thinking of is acceptable
    eg Johnston, Francis

  • suggest that you use a different version of the name
    eg McNally, Mel
    Use: McNally Design

  • suggest other related names to search for also
    eg Lyons Architects
See Also: Henry J Lyons & Partners

Having found the correct version of the practice name, you may click and transfer it into the Architect/Designer search field. If you wish to enter more than one name into the search field, you can copy and paste the others. Then click Search.
